Keeping Learning Alive: Preventing Summer Regression in Preschoolers
Summer break is here! This means popsicles, splash pads, vacations and lazy afternoons fill up our schedules and school can feel long forgotten. While no one expects children to automatically fill their days up with intellectually stimulating activities on their own, that doesn’t mean that parents and caregivers can’t! Summer learning regression can be a real problem and cause issues when kids head back to school at the end of break. Which is why we are about to explore some fun and exciting ways to keep those brains buzzing all summer long.
Engage in Fun and Educational Activities
Picture this: a group of preschoolers, armed with buckets and magnifying glasses, embarking on a thrilling nature hunt in their backyard. Or imagine them giggling with delight as they unleash their artistic prowess, creating masterpieces with paints, glitter, and all things colorful. Summers are meant to be a time of exploration, creativity, and endless possibilities. By infusing these months with fun and educational activities, we can make sure our preschoolers not only have a blast but also continue to grow intellectually.
Finding The Thrill In Nature
Nature becomes our ultimate teacher as we embark on thrilling adventures. From nature walks to scavenger hunts, our little explorers will delight in discovering fascinating bugs, colorful flowers, and hidden treasures. And why stop there? Let’s get our hands dirty with gardening activities, where preschoolers can witness the magic of planting seeds and watching them sprout into beautiful plants. It’s a hands-on lesson in patience, responsibility, and the wonders of nature.
You can stimulate all of the senses by keeping a nature journal with your child. Grab a blank notebook and have fun using art skills by helping your child creatively decorate the cover and practice writing their name on the front. Assist them by writing the day of the week at the top of the page or write it for them and point out the letters depending on their age. Each day have them check out the weather and draw a picture of whether it’s sunny with clear skies or rainy with clouds.
Play a small scavenger hunt each day with directions such as, “find something green” or “find something hard,” and have them draw a picture of it. You can help them out by labeling the color of the object, name, and other descriptive words they come up with.
By the end of the summer you will not only have spent unforgettable quality time with your child, but they will have continued to use their minds and skills without even thinking about it. This journal also gives them a great show and tell piece for back to school days!
The Power Of Reading
Preschool is such a fun age to engage in picture books with, and what’s a summer without stories? Let’s encourage a love for reading by creating a cozy reading corner, complete with soft pillows and a collection of their favorite books. For a special treat, take them to the local library for enchanting storytime sessions where they can join other eager young minds in the joy of storytelling. Whether it’s diving into fantastical worlds or learning about new topics, reading will be a delightful adventure that continues throughout the sunny season.
After reading each story practice reading comprehension by asking questions about the story you just read together. What was the character’s name? What was your favorite part of the story? Were there any animals in the story? Asking questions and hearing their answers will give you an idea of their working memory and any areas in that department that may need some extra work.
Your child’s teachers will greatly appreciate the effort you put into keeping your child’s brain active this summer and actively working on retaining everything they learned last year!
Foster Social Interaction and Group Activities
Summer is all about creating memories and building friendships. It’s the perfect time to foster social interaction and engage in exciting group activities that not only provide fun but also promote learning and personal growth. So, gather up your preschooler and some friends and embark on adventures that will leave them with friendships to cherish and skills to treasure!
Organizing Playdates and Group Outings
Plan some playdates within your local parent group, or call a friend and head to the local park for a day of laughter, games, and exploration. From tag and hide-and-seek to building sandcastles and chasing butterflies, these group activities not only enhance social skills but also promote teamwork and cooperation. And usually give you an opportunity to socialize with other parents as well for an added bonus!
Summer Camps And Workshops
State Parks and local nature centers are awesome places to check out for summer camps and workshops where kids can take nature hikes, learn about local trees and fauna, bird watch, and gain knowledge about the insects they see every day!
You can also check out summer programming offered by preschools in your area, like Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool, and see what kind of summer activities or child care they offer in the summer months. Even by choosing a reduced schedule for the summer, you can ensure your child is staying stimulated and away from summer learning regression.
Oftentimes by enrolling your little ones in camps they will be given opportunities where they can conduct exciting experiments, art workshops where their creativity can flourish, or even sports camps where they can develop their coordination and teamwork. These structured group activities provide an excellent opportunity for them to learn from experts, make new friends, and discover their passions.
Introduce The Joy Of Giving Back
Engaging in community projects or volunteering together not only teaches compassion and empathy but also opens their eyes to the power of making a difference. Whether it’s collecting items for those in need or assisting local organizations, these activities instill a sense of responsibility and gratitude in our preschoolers, showing them the impact they can have on their community. Projects may even be as simple as volunteering to fill the local nature center’s bird and squirrel feeders once or twice a week. After the task is completed you can sit back and watch the animals enjoy your efforts.
Through playdates, camps, and community projects, you’ll not only make lasting memories but also nurture essential life skills and a compassionate heart. By following these guidelines you can create a summer filled with laughter, growth, and the joy of connecting with others.
Parental Involvement
Parents, you are the superheroes in your preschooler’s learning journey. Your involvement and support play a crucial role in keeping the flame of learning alive during the summer months. By making learning fun and engaging in your child’s life you can show them a whole world that is out there for exploring.
By preventing summer regression and keeping learning alive, you will have nurtured a love for exploration, ignited curiosity, and instilled essential skills that will benefit our little ones for years to come. We’ve shown that learning can be woven seamlessly into the fabric of summer, turning every moment into an opportunity for growth and discovery. From outdoor adventures to artistic endeavors, from group activities to cozy reading nooks, you will create a summer filled with joy, laughter, and the wonders of knowledge.
