What Makes a Reggio Emilia Preschool Different?

If you’ve been researching preschools near you, you may have come across something called the Reggio Emilia approach. But what does that actually mean? And how is it different from what most of us think of as a “normal” preschool?

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, we use the Reggio Emilia approach because we believe your child deserves more than worksheets and routines. They deserve a place that celebrates who they are—curious, creative, and full of potential.

A Preschool That Follows Your Child’s Lead

In a Reggio Emilia preschool, learning starts with your child’s interests. Instead of teachers telling children exactly what to do or think, children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and follow their curiosity.

If a child is fascinated by rain puddles, that could spark a project involving art, science, storytelling, and more. That’s the beauty of this approach—it grows with the child.

The Classroom Is a Teacher, Too

A big part of what makes Reggio Emilia different is the environment. Classrooms are calm, beautiful, and designed to feel like home—not like a traditional school.

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, you’ll see:

  • Natural materials like wood, stones, and fabric
  • Cozy corners for reading, building, or drawing
  • Spaces arranged to invite movement, choice, and creativity

Every detail is intentional. We believe children thrive in spaces that feel welcoming, inspiring, and respectful of their independence.

Projects with Meaning (Not Busy Work)

Instead of worksheets, children work on hands-on, project-based learning. These projects can last days or even weeks—whatever feels right for the group.

Let’s say a few children get curious about insects. That could lead to:

  • Observing bugs outside
  • Reading books about their life cycles
  • Creating clay models or drawings
  • Talking about their discoveries as a group

This kind of learning builds real understanding—and it sticks. We make pinterest boards filled with inspiration! If your child is interested in bugs and gardening, for example, these activities will keep them engaged for hours outside.

Teachers Who Learn With the Children

In the Reggio Emilia approach, teachers aren’t just instructors. They’re guides, co-learners, and trusted adults who support each child’s growth.

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, our teachers:

  • Observe what children are interested in
  • Ask thoughtful, open-ended questions
  • Document learning through photos and quotes
  • Adapt the classroom and curriculum to follow the child’s lead

It’s a partnership—between child, teacher, and family. We love, love, love our teachers! Check out our special shout out to April’s National Teacher of the Month! You’ll fall in love with our team just as much all of our sweet students have.

More Than ABCs: Social-Emotional Growth

Reggio Emilia preschools focus just as much on emotions and relationships as they do on early academics.

Children learn to:

  • Express their feelings
  • Work together on shared goals
  • Solve problems with empathy
  • Build friendships and confidence

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, we believe social emotional skills are the heart of a strong foundation. When children feel safe and heard, they’re more open to learning and growing.

Capturing the Moments That Matter

Reggio-inspired classrooms rely on documentation—photos, quotes, and observations—to track learning and share it with families.

Our teachers at Little Sunshine’s Playhouse use tools like LuvNotes® to send daily updates straight to your phone. You’ll get to see not just what your child did that day—but how they learned, played, and connected.

Parents Are Part of the Team

One thing that makes Reggio Emilia truly special? The belief that parents are partners in education.

You know your child best—and we want to work alongside you. From regular updates and family events to open communication with your child’s teacher, you’re always in the loop and always valued.

Is a Reggio Emilia Preschool Right for Your Family?

If your child is full of questions, loves to explore, or thrives in creative environments, the Reggio Emilia approach could be a perfect match.

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, we’ve seen how this philosophy helps children:

We don’t try to fit children into a mold. We help them shine as they are.
