“I Am Special” At-Home Activity for Preschoolers

This month’s Creatively Shine® curriculum theme is “All About Me/I Am Special.” We are shining a light on each child’s unique qualities, interests, and strengths, helping them build a strong sense of self and belonging. Children will have opportunities to take on small responsibilities in the classroom, strengthening their confidence while also fostering connections with friends, teachers, and their school community.

Through creative projects, thoughtful conversations, and joyful play, children will discover what makes them truly one-of-a-kind. We’ll be celebrating individuality while also noticing the special similarities and differences that connect us all.

My Special Self-Portrait

One of the most meaningful ways children can explore this theme is through self-portraits. At home, you can help your child create a self-portrait that highlights what makes them unique!

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper or cardstock
  • Crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers
  • A small mirror (optional)
  • Stickers, yarn, fabric scraps, or other craft materials for decoration
  • Glue or tape

Step-by-Step Guide:

Look in the Mirror

Encourage your child to look at themselves closely: eye color, hair style, skin tone, even freckles or dimples. Ask them what makes their face special and unique.

Draw the Portrait

Have your child sketch their face and body. Remind them there is no “right” way. Self-portraits can be realistic, colorful, or even abstract!

Add Details

Invite them to add favorite clothing colors, accessories, or even items they love (like a soccer ball or favorite stuffed animal) around the portrait.

Decorate the Background

Help them include their family, pets, or symbols of traditions and hobbies that are important to them. This connects the idea of “I am special” to their relationships and experiences.

Show and Share

Encourage your child to share their self-portrait with your family. Ask questions like: What’s your favorite part of your drawing? What makes you special that you included here?

Why It’s Beneficial

  • Builds Self-Awareness: Children reflect on their strengths, preferences, and appearance.
  • Encourages Emotional Growth: Talking about what makes them special builds confidence and emotional intelligence.
  • Strengthens Family Connections: Sharing the project at home reinforces the importance of family, traditions, and love.
  • Boosts Creativity and Fine Motor Skills: Drawing, cutting, and decorating encourage both imagination and coordination.

At Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, we believe every child shines brightly in their own way. This month’s “I Am Special” theme is a joyful reminder that each child’s individuality is worth celebrating, and together, those unique qualities make our community stronger, warmer, and more connected.

We can’t wait to see the incredible self-portraits your children create! Feel free to share photos with us on our socials so we can celebrate their creativity and uniqueness with you.
