“Ocean’s Wonders” Curriculum At-Home Activity
This month’s Creatively Shine™ curriculum, “Ocean’s Wonders: Exploring Shores, Sand, & Sea Life,” invites children to dive into the incredible world beneath the waves, discovering the creatures, ecosystems, and mysteries that make our oceans so endlessly fascinating. To extend the fun and learning at home, we’re excited to share an activity your child will love: DIY Ocean in a Bottle!
What You’ll Need:
- A clear plastic bottle with a lid (an empty water bottle works perfectly)
- Water
- Baby oil or clear hair gel
- Blue food coloring
- Small ocean-themed items: shells, sand, tiny plastic sea creatures, or blue/green glitter
- Strong glue or hot glue (for sealing the lid — adult use only)
- Stickers, twine, or markers to decorate the outside (optional)
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Gather Your Ocean Treasures Before you start, go on a little treasure hunt around the house for anything ocean-themed. Tiny shells from a past beach trip, a small plastic fish, a pinch of sand, a few blue or green sequins. Talk with your child about what lives in the ocean. What creatures might be swimming in your bottle? What colors are under the sea?
- Add Your Ocean Floor Help your child carefully drop their ocean treasures into the bottle — shells first to create the “ocean floor,” then glitter or sequins to mimic the way light sparkles through water. This is a great moment to talk about what lives at the bottom of the ocean versus near the surface.
- Mix Your Ocean Water Fill the bottle about halfway with water, then add a few drops of blue food coloring and mix. Pour in baby oil or clear hair gel to fill the rest of the bottle — this is what creates that slow, wave-like movement when the bottle is tilted. Watch your child’s face when they see it for the first time!
- Seal and Decorate Secure the lid tightly — a grown-up can add a ring of hot glue around the cap to make sure it stays sealed. Then let your child decorate the outside with ocean stickers, wrap twine around the neck of the bottle, or draw sea creatures along the sides with permanent markers.
- Make Some Waves Once everything is set, hand it over and let them explore. Tilt it side to side and watch the waves roll. Try tipping it upside down slowly. Ask: what do you notice? Why do you think the oil and water don’t mix? What do you think it would feel like to be a fish swimming inside?
Why It’s Beneficial:
- Supports early science thinking as children observe what happens when oil and water are combined and begin to ask why
- Builds sensory awareness and calm through the slow, wave-like movement, which many children find naturally regulating
- Encourages vocabulary development as children describe what they see, name ocean creatures, and talk about life under the sea
We can’t wait to see your little oceanographers in action! Feel free to share photos of your Ocean in a Bottle with us on our socials — we love seeing the learning come to life at home. 🌊
