February Book Picks: “The Atelier of Wonder”

This February, our Creatively Shine® curriculum theme, The Atelier of Wonder: Adventures in Play, invites children to explore what happens when imagination leads the way. Through hands-on projects, shared ideas, and open-ended materials, children learn that their thoughts matter, and that creating together can make those ideas even stronger.

To extend this sense of wonder beyond the classroom, we’ve selected 10 inspiring picture books that celebrate creativity, problem-solving, and the joy of bringing ideas to life.

  1. Not a Box by Antoinette Portis

A simple box becomes endless possibilities in this beloved story that champions imaginative thinking. As children transform ordinary materials into extraordinary creations, they’re reminded that creativity often begins with seeing things a little differently.

  1. The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

This empowering story encourages children to take creative risks and trust their ideas. It’s a beautiful reminder that every artistic journey begins with a single mark and the confidence to try.

  1. Mix It Up! by Hervé Tullet

Interactive, playful, and full of surprises, this book invites children to participate directly in the creative process. It mirrors the hands-on experimentation children experience as they explore color, movement, and cause-and-effect.

  1. Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg

Mistakes become opportunities in this joyful celebration of creative problem-solving. Children learn that unexpected outcomes can lead to something even more wonderful, a powerful lesson for young creators.

  1. Journey by Aaron Becker

This wordless adventure invites children to tell the story themselves, building narrative skills and imagination. It encourages deep observation and collaboration as children interpret and discuss what they see.

  1. The Paper Kingdom by Helena Ku Rhee

This gentle story follows a child who turns everyday moments into a rich world of imagination while spending time at his family’s laundromat. It highlights creativity, resilience, and the quiet love found in ordinary routines.

  1. Return by Aaron Becker

In this final chapter of Aaron Becker’s trilogy, creativity and cooperation come together to build something meaningful. It’s a powerful visual story about community, imagination, and working together to bring ideas to life.

  1. The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle

This vibrant story celebrates artistic freedom and self-expression. Children are encouraged to see the world through their own creative lens. There is no “right” way to imagine.

  1. The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat

A touching story about imagination, belonging, and persistence, Beekle reminds children that their ideas—and friendships—are worth waiting for and nurturing.

  1. Dreamers by Yuyi Morales

This beautifully illustrated book celebrates creativity, storytelling, and the power of dreams. It highlights how imagination helps us build connections, express ourselves, and create something meaningful from our experiences.

As children build, imagine, and collaborate throughout The Atelier of Wonder, these stories offer gentle inspiration to continue that exploration at home. Whether your child is turning loose parts into something new or working together with others to create a shared world, these books remind us that creativity grows best when ideas are encouraged and celebrated.

Happy reading, and happy creating!
